Special Interest Groups

Introduction

The Network will host a number of Special Interest Groups (SIGs). The aims of these are to:

  • explore areas of research need that cross over two or more of the Network Theme areas
  • promote new multidisciplinary approaches to understanding complex areas of ageing research that are not being catered to already
  • promote communication and collaboration between researchers and key stakeholders related to the area of special interest
  • generate quality research proposals related to the area of special interest.

In 2005, multidisciplinary research agendas will be developed in three primary areas, outlined below.

Indigenous ageing

Convened by Professor Tony Broe
- Scientific Director, Ageing Research Centre, South East Sydney AHS - email

In collaboration with the Australian Association of Gerontology, this SIG will be planning research that can inform improvements of health for indigenous people over the life span.

Services

Convened by Professor Hal Kendig
- Research Professor of Ageing and Health, The University of Sydney
- National Convenor, ARC/NHMRC Research Network in Ageing Well - email

The Services SIG will be developing plans for research which can inform service developments that can more effectively meet the needs and aspirations of older people.

Bio-psycho-social research

Convenor to be advised

This SIG will consist primarily of basic bio-medical researchers who wish to establish collaboration with psycho-social researchers to better understand healthy ageing. It recognizes the joint auspice of the Network by the NHMRC as well as the ARC.
